The Oxford University geologist William Buckland (1784-1856) was thrilled when in 1823, exploring a Welsh cave, he unexpectedly came across some ancient human bones. Even so, unlike many other 19th-century geologists Buckland saw no head-on confrontation between science and religion. Although the Kirkdale cave had not confirmed his flood hypothesis, Buckland continued to search out other sources of evidence.
